SHOW INTRODUCTION As it is with everything in the human body, bones get thinner and weaker as we age. This process is slowed by exercise and activity: it's the use it or lose it paradigm. And this is true for both genders. Modern civilization has increased the rate of bone lose, judging from fossil remains from hunter-gatherer cultures. It may not only be our loss of nutrient density, sunlight, and physical activity, but increased exposure to oxidizers and xenobiotics, chemical pollution and medications. Parents of the baby boomers believed that if children drank their milk they would be protected from bone loss later in life. But recent studies question this hypothesis. In fact, few studies find a positive relationship between children's calcium consumption and bone growth. So what's a body to do? Pharmaceutical companies are introducing numerous antiresorptive drugs to inhibit the body from resorption but it might not surprise you to learn that the body already produces several very effective antiresorptive molecules, and they work in concert with nutrients. Today's show: Bones, and how to keep them strong forever without drugs.
