SHOW INTRODUCTION Im often surprised by the lack of awareness I encounter in my practice when people talk to me about how stress affects their health. People certainly understand that being stressed is damaging but how it works seems to confuse. For instance, many people believe that the stress of unresolved anger causes cancer or that being a care giver can break down a persons health. But there seems no real understanding of what the mechanisms are. In fact Id wager that most people dont really know what the word stress means outside of their own experience of being hyper aroused and exhausted. There is a great deal of research about the effects of stress on health and illness, not that research alone can answer individual health questions. Research does point to specific mechanisms that get mobilized showing us how other systems are affected leading to illness. Understanding those mechanisms gives a lot of choice in the decisions we make and how we live our lives, symptom free. Remarkably, the antidote is much simpler and easier to apply then most think... even intuitive!
