SHOW INTRODUCTION There seem to be three different kinds of people: those who still think that cholesterol causes heart disease, those who think that unstable clots cause heart disease, and those who think that inflammation causes heart disease. The funny thing is that all three think that statin drugs are good for heart disease. They lower choleserol, which is believed to reduce plaque. But current research is showing that their real action is about reducing inflammation. So why are people still being perscribed statin drugs to lower their cholesterol? Good question. A better question might be: is reducing inflammation with a drug who's action is essentially immuno-surpressant a good way of treating heart disease? Today our guest is retired astronaut and physican Duane Graveline. His current mission is to educate other physicans and patients about the potential dangers of statin drugs.
